AC Repair You Can Count On

AC Repair You Can Count On

When your air conditioner stops cooling in the middle of a Michigan or Ohio heat wave, you need someone who answers the phone and shows up. Tri-State Heating and Cooling is a family-owned HVAC contractor led by owner AJ, who brings more than 22 years of hands-on HVAC experience to every call. We repair central air conditioners and heat pumps of most makes and models across Southeast Michigan and Northern Ohio.

Every repair starts with a real diagnosis. We test the system, find what failed, explain it in plain language and give you your options before any work begins. If the fix is simple, we fix it. If your AC is near the end of its life, we tell you that too.

Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Repair

Most AC problems show warning signs before the system stops completely. Calling early usually means a smaller repair and fewer hot nights.

  • Warm or barely cool air from the vents
The system runs, but the house never cools down.
  • Weak airflow
Air trickles from the registers even with the fan running.
  • Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil
Often a sign of low refrigerant, a dirty coil or an airflow problem.
  • Water around the indoor unit
A clogged condensate drain or failed pump can cause leaks and shutdowns.
  • Short cycling
The AC turns on and off every few minutes instead of running full cycles.
  • Buzzing, clicking, grinding or squealing
New noises from the outdoor or indoor unit point to electrical or motor problems.
  • A sticky, humid house
Your AC should remove moisture as well as heat.
  • Rising electric bills or a tripping breaker
Both mean the system is working harder than it should.

Common AC Problems We Fix

We work through the whole system, from the thermostat to the outdoor condenser, to find the real cause.

  • Failed capacitors and contactors, the most common reason an outdoor unit won’t start
  • Refrigerant leaks and low charge, including leak searches and repairs
  • Frozen evaporator coils caused by airflow or refrigerant problems
  • Clogged condensate drains and float switch shutoffs
  • Condenser fan and blower motor failures
  • Compressor problems, with honest advice on whether the repair is worth it
  • Dirty condenser and evaporator coils that cut efficiency
  • Thermostat, wiring and control board issues

24/7 Emergency AC Repair

Air conditioners tend to fail on the hottest days of the year, when they’re working the hardest. Tri-State Heating and Cooling answers no-cool calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends and holidays.

What Affects the Cost of AC Repair

We quote the repair after we’ve diagnosed the problem, and you approve it before we start. The main things that affect the cost of an AC repair are:

  • The part that failed: a capacitor or contactor is a much smaller repair than a fan motor, coil or compressor.
  • Refrigerant type: older systems that use R-22 refrigerant cost more to recharge, because R-22 has not been produced in the U.S. since 2020.
  • Leaks: adding refrigerant without finding the leak only delays the next breakdown.
  • System age and brand: parts for older or less common units can take longer to find.
  • Access: equipment in tight attics or crawl spaces takes more time.
  • Timing: emergency calls at night or on weekends may differ from scheduled daytime visits.

Larger repairs can be paired with flexible financing for qualified customers.

Repair or Replace Your AC? Straight Answers

Our goal is always to get your existing system cooling again. When a repair no longer makes sense, we’ll show you why so you can decide. Replacement is usually worth considering when:

  • The air conditioner is 12 to 15 years old or older
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant and needs a recharge
  • The compressor has failed on an older unit
  • You’ve needed several repairs in the last few summers
  • Some rooms never get comfortable, even when the AC is running

If replacement is the better choice, we install high-efficiency American Standard air conditioners and heat pumps sized to your home. See our AC installation page for system options and replacement.

Prevent the Next Breakdown

Many no-cool calls start as small problems a spring tune-up would have caught: a weak capacitor, a dirty coil or a slow drain. A yearly AC tune-up before cooling season keeps your system efficient and less likely to fail during the first heat wave.

Ask about our HVAC maintenance plans for scheduled AC and furnace tune-ups.

Flexible Financing Options

When a major repair or a new air conditioner isn’t in the budget, Tri-State Heating and Cooling offers financing for qualified customers, so you can restore cooling now and pay over time.

AC Repair FAQs

Do you offer emergency AC repair?
Yes. We answer no-cool calls 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Why is my air conditioner running but blowing warm air?
Common causes are a failed capacitor or contactor in the outdoor unit, low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty or frozen coil, a clogged filter, or a thermostat problem. If replacing the filter and checking the thermostat doesn’t fix it, call for a diagnosis.

Why is there ice on my AC lines?
Ice usually means restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the AC off, let it thaw with the fan running, and call us. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.

Is it worth repairing an older air conditioner?
If the unit is under about 12 years old and the repair is modest, repair usually makes sense. If it’s older, uses R-22 refrigerant or has a failed compressor, replacement is often the better value. We’ll explain both options.

Do you repair heat pumps?
Yes. We repair and install heat pumps, which cool in summer and heat in winter.

How long does an AC repair take?
Most common repairs are finished in one visit. Less common parts may need to be ordered.
